When to Replace Your Cabin Air Filter
The cabin air filter cleans the air that enters your vehicle through the heating and cooling system. Because it traps dust, pollen and debris, it eventually clogs.
How often to change it
Many manufacturers suggest replacing it about once a year or every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Check your owner's manual for the interval for your vehicle, and change it sooner if you drive on dusty roads or in heavy traffic.
Signs it needs replacing
Weak airflow from the vents, a musty smell when the fan runs, more window fogging or more dust on the dash all point to a clogged filter.
Standard or carbon
A standard filter traps particles. A carbon filter adds a layer that helps reduce odors. Most are accessed behind the glove box and can be swapped in a few minutes with no tools.
